Ark Nova  -  1-4 Players

Animal-themed, Drafting, Economic, Solo Mode, Tile Placement, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Middleweight section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Plan and design a modern, scientifically managed zoo. With the ultimate goal of owning the most successful zoological establishment, you will build enclosures, accommodate animals, and support conservation projects all over the world. Specialists and unique buildings will help you in achieving this goal. (from BoardGameGeek.com)

  • Ark Nova is as close a board game gets to a "zoo tycoon" simulation. I love the huge variety of animal cards and the challenge provided by the action card system. Currently my #1 game of all time! I could play it over and over again.

  • The tactical and strategic depth make this game infinitely replayable and addicting.

Arkham Horror The Card Game Revised  -  1-4 Players

Card Game, Cooperative, Deckbuilding, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Horror-themed, Solo Mode, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Cooperative section - 2021 & 2022 Staff Pick

  • Something evil stirs in Arkham, and only you can stop it. Blurring the traditional lines between role-playing and card game experiences, Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a Living Card Game of Lovecraftian mystery, monsters, and madness!

No matter what compels you, no matter what haunts you, you'll find both your strengths and weaknesses reflected in your custom deck of cards, and these cards will be your resources as you work with your friends to unravel the world's most terrifying mysteries.

  • The new core set is an excellent value and it's a challenging co-op adventure. It's a fully cooperative experience where players build and upgrade their individual decks over a campaign while unraveling the mysteries of the Cthulhu universe.

Boss Monster 10th Anniversary  -  2-4 Players

Card Game, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Player Elimination, Take That, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Value section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Inspired by a love of classic video games, Boss Monster: The Dungeon Building Card Game pits 2-4 players in a competition to build the ultimate side-scrolling dungeon.

Playing Boss Monster requires you to juggle two competing priorities: the need to lure Heroes at a faster rate than your opponents, and the need to kill those Heroes before they reach your Boss. Players can build one room per turn, each with its own damage and treasure value.

  • Have you ever thought to yourself that you could build a better dungeon than you friends and family? Well with the power of Boss Monster now you can, build your own unique dungeon with a variety of cards and lead your Boss to victory!

Brass Birmingham  -  2-4 Players

Economic, Hand Management

Located in our Middleweight section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Brass: Birmingham is an economic strategy game sequel to Martin Wallace's 2007 masterpiece, Brass.

Brass: Birmingham tells the story of competing entrepreneurs in Birmingham during the industrial revolution. As in its predecessor, you must develop, build and establish your industries and network in an effort to exploit low or high market demands. Score the most Victory Points, counted at the end of the Canal era and again after the Rails era.

  • You will try to outfox your fellow industrialists in the Black Country of England at the dawn of the industrial revolution.

Camel Up  -  3-8 Players

Animal-themed, Bluffing, Dice, Party Game

Located in our Casual section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • Up to eight players bet on five racing camels, trying to suss out which ones will place first and second in a quick race around a pyramid. The earlier you place your bet, the more you can win — should you guess correctly, of course. Camels don't run neatly, however, sometimes landing on top of another one and being carried toward the finish line. Who's going to run when? That all depends on how the dice come out of the pyramid dice shaker, which releases one die at a time when players pause from their bets long enough to see who's actually moving!

  • I love the simple probabilities in Camel Up! They provide tons of tension and laugh-out-loud moments where sometimes the one camel you thought would be in last place somehow manages to win.

Carcassonne  -  2-5 Players

City Building, Tile Placement, Best Seller

Located in our Casual section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Carcassonne is a tile placement game in which the players draw and place a tile with a piece of southern French landscape represented on it. The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland or some combination thereof, and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played, in such a way that cities are connected to cities, roads to roads, et cetera. Having placed a tile, the player can then decide to place one of their meeples in one of the areas on it. When that area is complete that meeple scores points for its owner.

  • A very simple, yet deep game that can be played as gentle or cutthroat as you like.

Catan  -  3-4 Players

Dice, Economic, Best Seller

Located in our Casual section - 2022 & 2023 Staff Pick

  • Players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine which resources the island produces. Players build structures by 'spending' resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) which are represented by the relevant resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource.

Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road or the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points.

  • This is one of the only games my family can play without arguing. It is fun and simple, a great game for the whole family!

  • An excellent short strategy game that is so much fun to play! The expansions are great too!

Citadels  -  2-6+ Players

Bluffing, Card Game, City Building, Fantasy-themed, Set Collection, Take That, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Value section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • In Citadels, players take on new roles each round to represent characters they hire in order to help them acquire gold and erect buildings. The game ends at the close of a round in which a player erects their seventh building. Players then tally their points, and the player with the highest score wins.

  • Citadels is one of my favorite games that plays up to 8 players while still providing some great strategy through bluffing and predicting what characters your opponents will take. There's no better feeling than screwing over your friend when you know what they think they know!

  • Roles change which makes the game pretty interesting as you aren't left with the same strategy every time.

Cosmoctopus  -  1-4 Players

Cooperative, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Solo Mode, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Cosmoctopus is a cooperative, engine-building, tentacle-gathering board game where you guide Cosmoctopus through the Inky Realm, a flexible configuration of tiles, to gather resources and obtain powerful cards that represent relics, scripture, hallucinations and constellations. Harness the power of these bizarre objects and experiences, craft potent card combinations and be the first to gain 8 tentacles to win!

  • The engines you can build with your Scriptures, Hallucinations, and Relics are amazing! The game is like Sesame Street meets H.P. Lovecraft.

  • The theme is great - who wouldn't want to summon the cephalopod deity?!

Coup  -  2-6 Players

Bluffing, Card Game, Deduction, Memory, Party Game, Player Elimination, Take That, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Value section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile.

Be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.

  • It's a fun game of deceit and messing with your friends.

Destinies  -  1-3 Players

Dice, Fantasy-themed, Fighting, Miniatures, Solo Mode, Tile Placement

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Destinies is an RPG-like game using an app and the Scan&Play technology to offer players a unique story-driven experience full of dynamic events, epic adventures, and an ever-changing game world. Each turn players discover new parts of the world presented on tiles, explore them and pick one point of interest to visit. There they learn more about the story and make crucial choices of how they want to interact with people, creatures or situations faced there. The consequences of each choice are meaningful and often change the state of the world forever.

  • You can play solo, up to three players or team play 2v2. It's an app-board game hybrid that has a ton of fan-made scenarios along with the regular ones.

Dice Throne: Marvel  -  2-4 Players

Card Game, Dice, Fighting

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Attack your opponents and activate abilities by rolling your hero's unique set of five dice. Accumulate combat points and spend them on cards that have a large range of effects, such as granting permanent hero upgrades, applying status effects, and manipulating dice directly (yours, your teammate's, or even your opponent's).

  • Yahtzee meets Marvel! Roll and manipulate your dice to activate attacks and special powers. The game does a great job of capturing the feel of a cinematic superhero skirmish.

Dixit  -  3-6+ Players

Party Game

Located in our Casual section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Each turn in Dixit, one player is the storyteller who chooses one of the six cards in their hand, then expresses an idea, with sounds or words, that is reflected on that card's image, and places the card face down on the playing surface. Each other player then selects the card that best matches that expression, and passes the selected card to the storyteller, face down.

  • It's a fun, calm game all about art.

Dominion 2nd Edition  -  2-4 Players

Card Game, Deckbuilding, Drafting, Hand Management, Take That

Located in our Casual section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • In Dominion, each player starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can "buy" as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious, yet deck-clogging victory points by game end.

  • Dominion will always hold a special place in my heart. I love the constant feeling of ‘winning’ as I play amazing combos and out-pace my opponents. It doesn’t hurt that you can find some of my art in several of its expansions.

Dune Imperium  -  1-4 Players

Card Game, Deckbuilding, Sci Fi-themed, Solo Mode, Take That, Variable Player Powers, Worker Placement

Located in our Middleweight section - 2022 & 2024 Staff Pick

  • As a leader of one of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, raise your banner and marshal your forces and spies. War is coming, and at the center of the conflict is Arrakis – Dune, the desert planet.

Unlike many deck building games, you don’t play your entire hand in one turn. Instead, you draw a hand of cards at the start of every round and alternate with other players, taking one Agent turn at a time (playing one card to send one of your Agents to the game board). When it’s your turn and you have no more Agents to place, you’ll take a Reveal turn, revealing the rest of your cards, which will provide Persuasion and Swords. Persuasion is used to acquire more cards, and Swords help your troops fight for the current round’s rewards as shown on the revealed Conflict card.

  • It's a worker placement game that can be won in many ways. It is well balanced and competitive on many different levels. Also, I love how the battle is a simple numbers game, not luck based.

Dungeon Mayhem  -  2-4 Players

Card Game, Fantasy-themed, Fighting, Hand Management, Player Elimination, Take That, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Value section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Play as one of four brave, quirky characters — barbarian, paladin, rogue, or wizard — battling it out in a dungeon full of treasure! With magic missiles flinging, dual daggers slinging, and spiked shields dinging, it's up to you to prove your adventurer has the guts to bring home the glory!

  • A fast-paced take-that card game that highlights the true dangers that await you in the dungeon - namely your friends!

Everdell  -  1-4 Players

Animal-themed, Card Game, City Building, Drafting, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Set Collection, Solo Mode, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Casual section - 2021, 2022, 2023, & 2025 Staff Pick

  • Within the charming valley of Everdell, beneath the boughs of towering trees, among meandering streams and mossy hollows, a civilization of forest critters is thriving and expanding. From Everfrost to Bellsong, many a year have come and gone, but the time has come for new territories to be settled and new cities established. You will be the leader of a group of critters intent on just such a task. There are buildings to construct, lively characters to meet, events to host—you have a busy year ahead of yourself. Will the sun shine brightest on your city before the winter moon rises?

  • This game. Wow. I love this game for many reasons. It is a Player vs Player game but it isn't super competitive like other PvP games. You play as a group of little woodland creatures building their own village. You collect resources, villagers, and buildings to earn points. The cherry on top of this amazing ice cream sundae is the art. The art is AMAZING.

  • This would be my family friendly recommendation. It has a fun drafting mechanic as well as engine builder to introduce people to the different board game mechanics. It's competitive but you never really feel like you are fighting anyone which makes it generally more enjoyable.

Fantasy Realms  -  2-6+ Players

Card Game, Drafting, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Set Collection

Located in our Value section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • Build your Realm, one card at a time, as you collect Beasts, Armies, Wizards, and more! Each card is unique and scores points based on the other cards in your hand. You start with seven cards, and each turn you’ll draw a new card from the deck or discard, and discard one card from your hand, always trying to improve your Realm! Whoever’s realm scores the most points is the winner!

  • This is highly underrated "filler" card game. It is incredibly easy to learn and takes only about 20 minutes. It has some randomness but rewards you for learning the cards and combos.

Flamecraft  -  1-5 Players

Animal-themed, Card Game, City Building, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Set Collection, Worker Placement

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Artisan dragons, the smaller and magically talented versions of their larger (and destructive) cousins, are sought by shopkeepers so that they may delight customers with their flamecraft. You are a Flamekeeper, skilled in the art of conversing with dragons, placing them in their ideal home and using enchantments to entice them to produce wondrous things. Your reputation will grow as you aid the dragons and shopkeepers, and the Flamekeeper with the most reputation will be known as the Master of Flamecraft.

  • I could write a novel about this game, but the highlights are (1) it's adorable (2) it's beginner friendly (3) it's FUN!

Flash Point  -  2-6 Players

Cooperative, Dice, Solo Mode, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Cooperative section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • Flash Point: Fire Rescue is a cooperative game of fire rescue.

There are two versions of game play in Flash Point, a basic game and expert game.
In both variants, players are attempting to rescue 7 of 10 victims from a raging building fire.
As the players attempt to rescue the victims, the fire spreads to other parts of the building, causing structural damage and possibly blocking off pathways through the building. Each turn a player may spend action points to try to extinguish fires, move through the building, move victims out of the building or perform various special actions such as moving emergency vehicles.

  • You and your friends have to work together to save people and combat a ever-growing blaze. Has a normal and expert mode as well.

For Sale  -  3-6 Players

Card Game, Economic

Located in our Value section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • For Sale is a quick, fun game nominally about buying and selling real estate. During the game's two distinct phases, players first bid for several buildings then, after all buildings have been bought, sell the buildings for the greatest profit possible.

  • This is a fun auction game that is easy to get to the table at any gathering of 3 or more people!

Forest Shuffle  -  2-5 Players

Animal-themed, Card Game, Hand Management, Set Collection

Located in our Value section - 2025 Staff Pick

  • In Forest Shuffle, players compete to gather the most valuable trees, then attract species to these trees, thus creating an ecologically balanced habitat for flora and fauna.

  • A great game with light engine building, hand management and open drafting. You can win with so many different strategies, that it never (so far) gets boring.

Galaxy Trucker  -  2-4 Players

Dice, Sci Fi-themed, Tile Placement

Located in our Casual section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • Players begin by simultaneously rummaging through the common warehouse, frantically trying to grab the most useful component tiles to build their spaceship — all in real-time.

Once the ships are launched, players encounter dangerous situations while vying for financial opportunities, each hoping to gain the most valuable cargo and finish with as much of their ship still intact as possible.

The goal is to survive the trek — hopefully with at least some of your crew and ship intact — and have at least one credit by the end of the game.

  • The chaos and destruction of this game is fantastic and this new edition has tons of value!

Hanamikoji  -  2 Players

Card Game, Drafting, Hand Management

Located in our Value section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • Compete to earn the favor of seven illustrious Geishas by collecting each Geisha’s preferred performance item. With careful speculation and a few bold moves, can you outsmart your opponent to win the favor of the most Geishas?

  • Excellent couples game. Very well balanced.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle  -  2-4 Players

Card Game, Cooperative, Deckbuilding, Fantasy-themed, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Cooperative section - 2021 Staff Pick

  • The forces of evil are threatening to overrun Hogwarts castle in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle, a cooperative deck-building game, and it's up to four students to ensure the safety of the school by defeating villains and consolidating their defenses. In the game, players take on the role of a Hogwarts student: Harry, Ron, Hermione or Neville, each with their own personal deck of cards that's used to acquire resources.

By gaining influence, players add more cards to their deck in the form of iconic characters, spells, and magical items. Other cards allow them to regain health or fight against villains, keeping them from gaining power. The villains set back players with their attacks and Dark Arts. Only by working together will players be able to defeat all of the villains, securing the castle from the forces of evil.

  • I just enjoy the way you can build your deck up and still create something thematic to the movie. It offers simplistic goals and it’s easy to teach.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal  -  1-6 Players

Deckbuilding, Hand Management, Push Your Luck, Solo Mode

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • Based on simple and intuitive hand management, Heat: Pedal to the Metal puts players in the driver's seat of intense car races, jockeying for position to cross the finish line first, while managing their car's speed if they don't want to overheat. Selecting the right upgrades for their car will help them hug the curves and keep their engine cool enough to maintain top speeds. Ultimately, their driving skills will be the key to victory!

Drivers can compete in a single race or use the "Championship System" to play a whole season in one game night, customizing their car before each race to claim the top spot of the podium. They have to be careful as the weather, road conditions, and events will change every race to spice up their championship. Players can also enjoy a solo mode with the Legends Module or add automated drivers as additional opponents in multiplayer games.

  • This card-driven racing game keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire game!

Holotype  -  2-5 Players

Animal-themed, Worker Placement

Located in our Casual section - 2024 Staff Pick

  • A fast-paced light-strategy worker placement board game about paleontology for 2-5 players.

Players use their Paleontologist, Grad Student and Field Assistant workers to gather fossils, do research and publish new Dinosaurs and Marine Reptiles as Holotypes. Personal and semi-collaborative Global Objectives feature modern paleontology concepts such as cladistics and taxonomy.

The player with the most Victory Points from publishing Holotypes, completing Personal Objectives and contributing to Global Objectives wins.

  • This is a fairly simple worker placement game with several strategies available for gaining points. Easy to learn, easy to teach, and fun to play.

Hues and Cues  -  3-6+ Players

Party Game

Located in our Value section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • What hue do you think of when we say “apple”? Hues and Cues is a vibrant game of colorful communication where players are challenged to make connections to colors with words. Using only one and two-word cues, players try to get others to guess a specific hue from the 480 colors on the game board. The closer the guesses are to the target, the more points you earn. Since everyone imagines colors differently, connecting colors and clues has never been this much fun!

Gather around with three to ten people to play a quick and simple game with a prism of possibilities! First, a “cue giver” hides a specific color they’ve chosen out of a deck of cards. There are 480 shades on the board in front of you! After getting one- and two-word cues, everyone places their marker on which color they think is being described. “Coffee.” Is it dark brown, as in freshly brewed? “Au lait.” With milk. That means I should pick a lighter shade!

Use examples from everyday life, from nature to pop culture, or materials and moods. Everyone around the table gets a turn to give cues and guess. The better your hints or guesses, the more points you earn. Play off others' experiences to narrow down what they have in mind!

  • The game is very easy to learn and a lot of fun with family and friends!

Kabuto Sumo  -  2-4 Players

Animal-themed, Fighting, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Casual section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • In Kabuto Sumo, you are one of the contending beetles that is battling for supremacy in the ring and your place in the pantheon of legendary wrestlers. The gameplay of Kabuto Sumo resembles the coin-pusher arcade games in which you strategically drop quarters and anxiously anticipate coins cascading off the platform. This game features a similar experience, with you trying to strategically slide pieces onto the board and push the other players out of the ring. It's an exciting combination of dexterity, strategy, and luck.

  • This is such a fun game! My teenager niece that "hates games" asked me to bring it over to play again. Who doesn't like playing with bugs?!

Khora Rise of an Empire  -  2-4 Players

City Building, Dice, Drafting, Economic

Located in our Middleweight section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • In Khôra: Rise of an Empire, each player is the head of a blossoming city-state in Ancient Greece.

On your turn, you must take 2 of the following 7 Actions: Philosophy, Legislation, Culture, Trade, Military, Politics, or Development. Choose Actions that align with your strategy, but which also work with your dice roll.

You will need to adapt your strategy constantly and strengthen your Actions by moving your markers up on your Economy, Culture, and Military Tracks.

Move up on the Taxes Track to collect highly sought-after Drachmas, the Troop Track to Explore and gather Knowledge tokens, and the Glory Track to capitalize on your Knowledge.

Unlock Achievements and, above all, make sure you have the most points at the end of the 9th Round to be crowned with the laurels of victory!

  • This game is about the power of Greece back in their heyday. The resource management, dice rolling and asymmetric gameplay make for a fun combination that changes every game you play.

Located in our Casual section - 2021 & 2023 Staff Pick

  • n King of Tokyo, you play mutant monsters, gigantic robots, and strange aliens—all of whom are destroying Tokyo and whacking each other in order to become the one and only King of Tokyo.

The fiercest player will occupy Tokyo, and earn extra victory points, but that player can't heal and must face all the other monsters alone!

  • Love rolling a fist full of dice

  • It's like Yahtzee but you get to play as giant monsters and fight your friends.

Kingdomino  -  2-4 Players

City Building, Drafting, Tile Placement

Located in our Value section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • In Kingdomino, you are a lord seeking new lands in which to expand your kingdom. You must explore all the lands, including wheat fields, lakes, and mountains, in order to spot the best plots, while competing with other lords to acquire them first.

The game uses tiles with two sections, similar to Dominoes. Each turn, each player will select a new domino to connect to their existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play. The order of who picks first depends on which tile was previously chosen, with better tiles forcing players to pick later in the next round. The game ends when each player has completed a 5x5 grid (or failed to do so), and points are counted based on number of connecting tiles and valuable crown symbols.

  • Kingdomino is one of the best family games to come out in the past 5 years or so. It's fast, easy to learn, and can be replayed over and over again. I love it and so does my daughter!

Link City  -  2-6 Players

Cooperative, Party Game, Tile Placement

Located in our Value section - 2025 Staff Pick

  • In this cooperative party game, players create the biggest possible city in 6 exciting rounds, trying to have the most connections between the Location tiles and score points.

In each round, a different person takes on the role of mayor. His or her mission: secretly connect 3 new locations to the sites marked by 3 building studs. The twist? The other players then talk together, trying to make the same choices as the mayor.

Harmony is the only way to validate the mayor's decisions and expand the city! Take up the challenge, unlock bonuses and admire your unique and unusual city!

  • Quick group game. Plays in about 15 minutes once you know the rules. Fun to figure out some logic.

Mansions of Madness  -  1-5 Players

Marvel Champions  -  1-4 Players

Card Game, Cooperative, Fighting, Hand Management, Solo Mode, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Cooperative section - 2021, 2022, & 2024 Staff Pick

  • Marvel Champions: The Card Game invites players to embody iconic heroes from the Marvel Universe as they battle to stop infamous villains from enacting their devious schemes. As a Living Card Game, Marvel Champions is supported with regular releases of new product, including new heroes and scenarios.

The Village Geek hosts a weekly play night for Marvel Champions.

  • I could say so many great things about Marvel Champions but to be simple, it is a game for everybody. It has the ability to deck build if you are a deck builder. It allows you to fight the villains from the Marvel universe and really challenge you. The best part is, there is a role for everybody. You have aggression to beat up the bad guy, justice to stop the bad guy from winning, leadership that can help everyone do what they need to do and protection that just stops the villain’s attacks in their tracks. Just an overall great game.

  • The game is relatively simple to learn and to get into. The customization options for your decks and the villain decks make for different and challenging scenarios each time you play.

Munchkin  -  3-6 Players

Card Game, Fantasy-themed, Fighting, Hand Management, Party Game, Take That, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Value section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run.

This award-winning card game, designed by Steve Jackson, captures the essence of the dungeon experience... with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm... or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon.

  • It is a game where you develop your hero as you go. You can combine all the different versions of Munchkin to play in many different worlds at once. Marvel allows you to have Iron Man's Armor with Cap's Shield for example. Each game is different and fun to solve the challenge as you try to become the strongest hero in the game.

Mysterium  -  2-6+ Players

Cooperative, Hand Management, Party Game, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Cooperative section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • In the 1920s, Mr. MacDowell, a gifted astrologer, immediately detected a supernatural being upon entering his new house in Scotland. He gathered eminent mediums of his time for an extraordinary séance, and they have seven hours to make contact with the ghost and investigate any clues that it can provide to unlock an old mystery.

Unable to talk, the amnesiac ghost communicates with the mediums through visions, which are represented in the game by illustrated cards. The mediums must decipher the images to help the ghost remember how he was murdered: Who did the crime? Where did it take place? Which weapon caused the death? The more the mediums cooperate and guess well, the easier it is to catch the right culprit.

  • Mysterium is a cooperative game that feels incredibly different than any other! It's a great one to introduce to non-gamers and people who love party games. This is one everyone should try!

Obscurio  -  2-6+ Players

Bluffing, Party Game, Traitor Element, Variable Player Powers

Located in our Casual section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • The Sorcerer is out to get you! Find your way among the illusions, but beware of the traitor in your ranks!

The Grimoire guides their team towards the exit using images, upon which they point at certain details. Working together, the other players have to find the exit as quickly as possible while avoiding picking the wrong cards. Communicate efficiently and avoid the illusions on your way to escape the Sorcerer's library!

Onirim  -  1-2 Players

Card Game, Cooperative, Drafting, Fantasy-themed, Hand Management, Set Collection, Solo Mode,

Located in our Value section - 2023 Staff Pick

  • Onirim is a solo/cooperative card game. You (and a partner, if you wish) must work (together) against the game to gather the eight Door cards before the deck runs out; you can obtain those Door cards either by playing cards of the same color three turns in a row, or by discarding (under specific circumstances) one of your powerful Key cards. In both cases you will have to decide the best use of each card in your hand and carefully play around the Nightmares. Those cards are hidden in the deck and will trigger painful dilemmas when drawn...

  • Onirim is one of the best solo card games ever! It has great depth and replayability for how fast it is. People who love card games, but especially solitaire need to play it!

Onitama  -  2 Players

Hand Management

Located in our Value section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • Onitama is a two-player, perfect information abstract game with a random starting set-up. On a 5x5 board, both players start with five pawns on their side, with the main pawn in the middle.

Each player has two open cards that each display a possible move for any of her pieces. There is a fifth card that cannot be used by either player. On a player's turn, she chooses one of her cards, moves one of her pieces according to the chosen card, then replaces the card she used with the fifth card. The other player then chooses one of his cards, moves accordingly, and exchanges that card with this fifth card — which is, of course, the card the first player just used.

Moving onto one of the opponent's pawns removes that pawn from the game. Taking the opponent's main pawn, or moving your main pawn into your opponent's main pawn's starting space, wins you the game.

  • A simpler game of chess. Easy to carry and take anywhere. A really great game for all ages.

Pandemic  -  2-4 Players

  • The game board depicts several major population centers on Earth. On each turn, a player can use up to four actions to travel between cities, treat infected populaces, discover a cure, or build a research station. A deck of cards provides the players with these abilities, but sprinkled throughout this deck are Epidemic! cards that accelerate and intensify the diseases' activity. A second, separate deck of cards controls the "normal" spread of the infections.

Taking a unique role within the team, players must plan their strategy to mesh with their specialists' strengths in order to conquer the diseases.

  • Easy co-op game. Move around a board, stop the diseases from spreading and find the cure. Simple and pretty quick to play.

  • Star Realms is easy to learn, especially if you’re familiar with deck-building games, but takes time to master. Each time you play, the game is filled with various strategic decision points. Should I take the best card for me or the best card for my opponent? Should I focus on taking cards of a particular faction or on taking the best card available? Should I be focusing on acquiring more Trade or more Combat? Should I attack my opponent’s Base or their Authority? These are just some of the many choices you’ll be faced with. Tsuro  -  2-6+ Players

Hand Management, Player Elimination, Tile Placement

Located in our Casual section - 2022 Staff Pick

  • A beautiful and beautifully simple game of laying a tile before your own token to continue its path on each turn. The goal is to keep your token on the board longer than anyone else's, but as the board fills up this becomes harder because there are fewer empty spaces left... and another player's tile may also extend your own path in a direction you'd rather not go. Easy to introduce to new players, Tsuro lasts a mere 15 minutes and actually does work for any number from 2 to 8.

  • I like this game because it is quick to learn, and can be played in a decent amount of time. There is almost no set up time, so great for game nights or a party game. It works just as well for 2 players as it does for 4, though the more players you have, the more challenging it is!
